CASE STUDY : The Lutheran Study Bible App

Transforming 2,200 Pages of Study Content into a Modern Mobile Experience

THE CHALLENGE

Concordia Publishing House set out to digitize the Lutheran Study Bible — more than 2,200 pages of complex religious material — into an intuitive, accessible mobile experience. The app needed to integrate deep reference tools, note systems, and multimedia features while maintaining the spirit and clarity of the original text. It had to serve a global audience of readers, pastors, and students who expected both theological accuracy and modern usability.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

As the lead iOS developer on this ambitious project, I owned the iOS side of mobile development of a comprehensive Bible study application that transformed over 2,200 pages of religious content into an intuitive, feature-rich iOS experience. The app successfully digitized 66 books, 31,086 verses, 26,299 study notes, 291 articles, and over 6,000 cross-references while maintaining the integrity of this beloved Lutheran resource.

  • Timeline: 6 months from concept to MVP launch

  • Results: Nearly 14,000 users and 4.6-star App Store rating within two months

  • Platform: iOS (with parallel Android development)

Technical Implementation

Core iOS Architecture

  • Swift & SwiftUI: Built a modern, responsive interface using SwiftUI for seamless user interactions and native iOS design patterns

  • Kotlin Multiplatform: Collaborated with the Android team to implement shared data and network layers, reducing code duplication and ensuring feature parity

  • SQLite Integration: Worked with a robust local database solution for solid user experience, allowing access to verses, study notes, cross-references, highlights, and notes both online and offline

  • CI/CD: Using GitHub Actions and Fastlane we automated testing and deployment to ensure stability and ease of testing for both internal QA and client testing.
